In 1962, Ansel Adams photographed this same large granite boulder. At that time, there were large fractures visible in the rock mass, but the boulder was still whole. 40 years later, large chunks of rock had fallen away, leaving this beautiful rock sculpture reflected in the river. The earlier photo can be found in the 1979 Ansel Adams book "Yosemite and the Range of Light" (photo #33, "Rock, Merced River, Autumn, Yosemite Valley").
